Welcome to Lendal and Lendal Bridge, an area closely connected to York’s riverside history and the movement of people into the heart of the city. The bridge crosses the River Ouse and was completed in the 1860s, replacing an earlier ferry crossing that had operated here for centuries. Its construction made travel across the river much easier and helped connect different parts of the growing city.

For many years, people had to pay a toll to cross Lendal Bridge, but on 7 August 1894 the bridge officially became toll free, an event celebrated by the people of York. Nearby, you can also spot historic buildings such as Lendal Tower, which once formed part of York’s medieval defences and worked alongside towers on the opposite bank to control river traffic entering the city.

Today, Lendal remains one of the best places to experience York’s mix of riverside views, medieval history, and bustling city life, with the River Ouse continuing to shape the city just as it has for centuries.
