Welcome to York Minster, one of the largest and most impressive Gothic cathedrals in Northern Europe. For centuries, this area has stood at the heart of York’s religious, political, and social life, drawing pilgrims, royalty, merchants, and travellers through its great stone doors. Construction of the Minster began in the 1200s, although places of worship stood here long before that, including during the Roman and Viking periods.
As you explore the area, look closely at the incredible stonework, towering windows, and carved details surrounding the Minster. Even today, the cathedral dominates the city skyline, reminding visitors just how important York has been throughout history.
