Welcome to Whip-Ma-Whop-Ma-Gate, one of the shortest streets in York and certainly one of the most unusual names in the city. The name is believed to come from an old local phrase roughly meaning “neither one thing nor the other,” which is fitting for such a tiny stretch of road connecting larger medieval streets nearby.

Despite its size, this small street sits within one of the busiest and oldest parts of York. For centuries, people would have passed through here while moving between markets, workshops, and homes within the crowded medieval city. Its unusual name has made it one of York’s most photographed and talked-about streets.

Today, Whip-Ma-Whop-Ma-Gate is a reminder that even the smallest corners of York can hold centuries of history and character.
