THE SHAMBLES

You can find the image hint for the clue at the bottom of this page.

Welcome to The Shambles, one of the most famous and best-preserved medieval streets in Europe. With its narrow cobbled roadway, overhanging timber-framed buildings, and crooked shopfronts, the street still feels remarkably similar to how it would have looked hundreds of years ago. Some of the buildings here date back as far as the 14th century.

Originally, The Shambles was home to York’s butchers. The name likely comes from the Anglo-Saxon word “fleshammels,” referring to the shelves used to display meat outside the shops. If you look carefully, you can still spot hooks, wide windows, and other features connected to the street’s past.

Today, The Shambles is filled with independent shops, cafés, and visitors from around the world, but its medieval atmosphere remains one of the most distinctive sights in York.

The Shambles is one of the most photographed streets in York, but can you capture it in a unique way?
