Welcome to Treasurer’s House, one of York’s most fascinating historic buildings. Although the house itself dates mainly from the 17th century, the site has been important for far longer and once formed part of the area surrounding York Minster. Over the centuries it became home to wealthy church officials connected to the Minster, giving the house its name.
In the late 1800s, the house was carefully restored by wealthy industrialist Frank Green, who filled the rooms with furniture, artwork, and objects designed to recreate the atmosphere of an earlier age. Many of the features visitors see today reflect his vision of what a grand historic York home should feel like.
Treasurer’s House is also famous for its ghost stories, particularly the legend of Roman soldiers seen marching beneath the building. Whether you believe the stories or not, the house stands in an area layered with centuries of York’s history, where Roman, medieval, and Georgian York all overlap within the same streets.

Treasurer’s House is filled with hidden corners, old stonework, and mysterious details that feel frozen in time. Find a spot around the house or nearby streets that looks the most secretive or atmospheric and take a photo that could belong in a mystery story. Bonus points if your picture captures shadows, archways, old doorways, or makes it feel like somebody might be watching from the windows above!
