Welcome to Stonegate, one of York’s most famous and historic streets. The route itself dates back to Roman times, when it formed part of the road leading towards the fortress at the centre of the city. Its modern name comes from the Old Norse word “gata,” meaning street, reflecting York’s strong Viking influence during the time of Jórvík.
Over the centuries, Stonegate became home to wealthy merchants, goldsmiths, printers, and craftsmen, helping turn it into one of York’s most important streets. Many of the buildings you see today date from the medieval and Georgian periods, with timber-framed upper floors, decorative shopfronts, and narrow passageways still giving the street its historic character.
Today, Stonegate remains one of the busiest and most atmospheric parts of York, connecting the city’s ancient past with its lively modern centre.

In this area, there are some really interesting building signs and architectural delights. Try to capture some of them to encapsulate the character of Stonegate.
