Welcome to Pavement, one of York’s oldest and busiest historic streets. Despite the modern meaning of the word, the name “Pavement” comes from the Latin word pavimentum, meaning a paved or public place. For centuries, this area has been an important gathering point within the city, sitting close to York’s markets, trading streets, and civic buildings.

During the medieval period, Pavement was a centre of commerce and public life, with traders, merchants, and visitors passing through daily. The street was also home to markets selling a variety of goods, helping make this part of York one of the busiest areas in the city.

Today, Pavement still acts as a lively connection between York’s historic streets, blending old buildings and modern shops while continuing its long tradition as a place where people gather, trade, and explore.
