Welcome to Goodramgate, one of York’s oldest and most characterful streets. Its unusual name comes from the Viking phrase “Guthrum’s Gate,” with “gate” meaning street in Old Norse rather than an entrance. During the Viking age, this area formed part of the bustling city of Jórvík, where traders, craftspeople, and travellers moved through narrow streets lined with timber buildings and workshops.
Today, Goodramgate still preserves much of its medieval atmosphere. Many of the buildings lean slightly with age, while upper floors stretch out above the street in the traditional timber-framed style designed to create extra space. As you explore, look carefully at the details around you, from crooked beams and old windows to hidden alleyways branching away from the main street.
Goodramgate also played an important role in medieval York, connecting the busy market areas with York Minster nearby. Even now, the street feels like a place where layers of York’s history overlap, blending Viking roots, medieval architecture, and modern city life together in one narrow stretch of road.

Goodramgate is one of the best places in York to spot beautiful timber-framed buildings and historic shopfronts. Take a photo that captures the street’s medieval character, whether that’s the black-and-white Tudor-style buildings, colourful hanging signs, or the narrow historic street stretching into the distance. Bonus points if your picture looks like it could have been taken hundreds of years ago!
