CLIFFORD'S TOWER

You can find the image hint for the clue at the bottom of this page.

Welcome to Clifford’s Tower, one of York’s most recognisable historic landmarks. Standing high above the city on its grassy mound, the tower is the remains of York Castle, originally built by William the Conqueror shortly after the Norman conquest of England. Over the centuries, the castle served many purposes, including a royal stronghold, prison, and centre of government power within York.

The current stone tower dates mainly from the 13th century and offers impressive views across the city. Its unusual shape and elevated position made it both defensive and symbolic, reminding people of Norman control over medieval York.

Clifford’s Tower is also connected to one of the darkest events in York’s history. In 1190, during a period of violent anti-Jewish persecution, many members of York’s Jewish community sought refuge here before a tragic massacre took place. Today, the site stands not only as a historic fortress, but also as an important place of remembrance within the city’s history.
