The Frankfurter Römer has served as Frankfurt’s city hall for over 600 years, making it one of the longest-used civic buildings in Germany. Behind its famous stepped façade lies a complex of interconnected buildings, which have been expanded and adapted over time as the city grew.

One of its most important rooms is the Kaisersaal (Emperor’s Hall), where celebrations were traditionally held following the coronation of Holy Roman Emperors. Portraits of past emperors line the walls, linking the building closely to Frankfurt’s role in imperial history.

Although the Römer was heavily damaged during World War II, it was rebuilt using historical plans to restore its original appearance. Today, it remains the working centre of the city’s administration, meaning that decisions shaping modern Frankfurt are still made within its historic walls.

If you look closely at the façade, you’ll notice the repeating triangular gables and rows of windows, a design that has become one of the city’s most recognisable symbols.
