The Hauptwache has stood at the centre of Frankfurt’s activity for nearly 300 years. When it was first built in 1730, it marked the edge of the old city, acting as both a guard post and a place of control. Over time, as Frankfurt expanded, it became less about defence and more about daily life.

Today, the square surrounding Hauptwache is one of Frankfurt’s busiest transport interchanges, with underground trains running beneath your feet. If you look closely, you’ll notice entrances leading down into this network, connecting different parts of the city and beyond.

The contrast here is striking: a historic guardhouse that once controlled movement now sits above a place designed to keep people moving constantly, making it a perfect example of how Frankfurt has adapted over time.
