Martin Luther passed through Frankfurt in 1521 on his journey to the Diet of Worms, one of the most important moments of the Reformation. At this time, Luther had already challenged the authority of the Catholic Church and was being called to answer for his teachings before the Emperor.
During his stay in Frankfurt, he was travelling under increasing pressure, knowing that refusing to change his views could have serious consequences. Shortly after leaving the city, he would stand before the Imperial Diet and refuse to recant, an act that helped shape the future of religion across Europe.
Frankfurt was an important stop along this route, as it was a major centre for travel, trade, and communication. Ideas spread quickly here, making it a key place for the exchange of new and sometimes controversial beliefs.
As you stand in this area today, you are close to the path Luther once took during a journey that would go on to change history.
